Software development is a complex field, and the scope of a developer’s responsibilities continues to grow. These days, being able to develop functionally correct programmes is no longer enough. Often, even a university degree is insufficient to meet the increased demands for software and code quality in professional life. This problem is further exacerbated by the rapid development of the entire industry.

Clean code as the answer to increasing complexity

Clean code (or software craftsmanship) has crystallised from the experience of many software projects and developers. It contains principles and procedures to make the complexity of software and projects more manageable and is based on a mindset that focusses on the continuous development of both people and software.

Structure of the Clean Code Development training

Our Clean Code Development training course consists of three modules, each of which can be booked separately. The course deals in detail with various aspects of the software development process. Each module can be completed in one day and offers numerous options for customisation. During our open seminars, we adapt the focus to suit the interests and requirements of the participants. For in-house seminars, we collaborate with you in advance to determine the most suitable combination of training content and formats.

Not all source code is the same. If you compare source code from different projects or developers, a wide range quickly becomes apparent. Source code can be more maintainable, easier to read, easier to test, etc. This module is concerned on the one hand with providing participants with a large number of proven principles and on the other hand with training the mindset for the constant improvability of source code. Instead of practical exercises in a specific programming language, examples from various projects are used and great emphasis is placed on discussing the findings.

Accordingly, the module can be customised very specifically to your requirements. Integration of examples from your projects, tailoring of the principles covered or individual focal points and discussion topics are just some of the many possibilities.

Test-First

Saving source code in a file is just the tip of the iceberg of modern software development. Knowledge of numerous other topics, such as continuous integration, continuous development and test-first approaches, is required by developers today for successful day-to-day work in software projects. This module provides an overview of these topics and gives participants the opportunity to reflect on their practical implementation in their company or project context and discuss them in depth with the trainer.

In this module, our experience shows that participants often focus on the topics that are most relevant to them due to their willingness to discuss them. Nevertheless, it can be useful to customise the content, e.g. to existing processes or even to create a workshop format for certain topics.

Even if the exact boundary between software design, architecture and requirements is not always clear, there is undoubtedly a need to be able to talk about software systems at a higher level of abstraction. In addition to a brief recapitulation of classical architectural approaches, the module introduces clean architecture as a potential alternative. In addition, various aspects of architecture are considered, modern approaches to this are presented and in some cases explored in depth in exercises. The content ranges from topics relating to the documentation of architectures to the concept of evolutionary architecture.

The topics covered are deepened using a consistent example, which can also be replaced by a specific project of the participants if required. It is also possible to adapt the various contents to the participants, including working on specific architectural issues in the form of a workshop.

Goals of the Clean Code Training

The objectives are based on the respective modules. The overall aim of the training is to establish a mindset for the continuous development of the participants’ software and their own skills. A wide range of principles, practices and technologies are presented in order to give participants as many points of reference as possible for their everyday project work.
